WHen you need to measure something small, you want a small ruler! Yes, I've got a ¼" long ruler. It's the whole set with the holder for the rules and the plastic case. I think I paid about $10 for it which was worth it to me if for nothing else other than the novelty.
And I bought a 6" Starrett dial caliper cheap a while back. Works perfectly, and came in the case which is in the box so clearly well cared for.
But...
Maybe he used it to measure the thickness of veneer. I got nothing on "calipher"
