I pulled up the first link I could find, so this is not an endorsement of this brand, but the idea is solid.
Use your present "unsafety can", add a high flow nozzle, and drill a vent, and call it a day.
I live in Virginia, I do not want to hear your northern cans can't cut it. I've only had one can leak at a seal- one which I picked up off a highway, one which essentially got chucked off a flatbed at 70 mph. My other 5 or 10 have been fine. And that's in the deep ol' south!

With proper ventilation and safety features to defeat government
safety features, they are fine. We've owned several metal cans along the way. Between a converted plastic "un"safety can to a real safety can vs. a metal safety can, I'd prefer the converted plastic safety can.
Lighter. Simpler. Less likely to damage your 911 fender in an emergency
For less than 20 bucks you will be in the promised land of octane.
edit- $20 dollars + a new five gallon "unsafety can"- plastic and still less than a bs spouted metal can.
