When I was about 15 and half, I asked my dad what car he was going to get for me. He laughed heartily, and replied whatever I could afford to buy for myself. He did give me a interest free loan of $600 that I paid in full.

It was for a mighty 1960 VW bug with a 36 HP engine when new. 0 to 60 was 72 seconds if there was no hit of a headwind, and not even a slight uphill. With a headwind, it was infinite as top speed was 62 on a downhill slope. I had to pay for 100% of all costs, except insurance. I figured out right away, DYI was the way to go for a broke kid. I got my driver's license on my 16th birthday.

I did learn some wrenching from my older brother. I don't recall dad ever working on any of his cars. Cars were just an big expensive appliance he had to park outside to my dad.

With two antique cars from the mid 1980s with a combined mileage of 596,000 miles, I always have some project to do on one or the other and sometimes both cars.
