Cliff, for many years the term Chinaman was used just like Jap. Most Americans had no idea it was racial insult. Like calling an Native American an Indian.
We learned to adjust our language, and never dreamed it was an insult, and never intended it as an insult. Your neighbor may well suffer from some cognitive decline. It was a term she learned at an early age, and she likely does not mean it in a derogatory way.
It is great you continue to help her out. You are a hero in our minds for putting up with her, and ignoring her insults. Good on you!.
