He works much harder than I do and it is in a pretty much thankless job. He probably pays 1/6 the tax I do. The inadequate salary he does get comes from my tax, and I am very happy with that.

No I am not, I am making the assumption that one who earns a salary, by definition, must work harder for that money he earns than someone who did not work for it at all.
What you are talking about is the relative value of work, not wealth redistribution. It is certainly no secret that some professions pay less than others...one must choose accordingly or be disappointed.
