"Life" had a pretty interesting and convincing alien organism. "Contact" also cleverly avoided typical humanoid representations. Perhaps the best alien life representation was the monolith in "2001."
I have an increasingly difficult time suspending disbelief with any representation of alien life that is either laterally or radially symmetrical. And anything with a head is right out.
But I'm guessing studio execs probably insist on showing the "monster" at some point in the film. So hopefully Spielberg has taken the "Jaws" route and held off as long as possible. If anyone would have carte blanche it would be him.
