I'm surprised that once you finalize the payment, you don't get a confirmation screen with some sort of confirmation number. I normally take a screenshot of those confirmation numbers with the whole browser window that shows the site and URL. That way, I have some way to show that the website says that the payment was completed. I would think that "they" should be able to trace to some extent, the confirmation number. It should at least enable you to get out of late payment fees.
