I saw that today. It's interesting to me. Often when I'm reading about various types of trees I'll see things like "average lifespan 60 years" but then there are all sorts of trees all over the place that are crazy ages. I'm sure that environment has a TON to do with how long a tree grows.
This news reminds me of the Sycamore Gap tree incident

New Growth: Environmental experts hoped the tree might regenerate naturally. Fortunately, the Sycamore Gap stump is alive, and new shoots have sprouted to allow the tree to coppice. However, it will take centuries to reach its former size.
Site Remains: The original felled trunk was removed by crane and cut into smaller pieces. A section of the heartwood is on display at The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre.
