The largest Sitka Spruce in America (206 feet high) was hit by lightning in the '50's and then the damaged remains were toppled in a windstorm in 2007. It was a tourist attraction that could be viewed on the way to the Oregon coast and I will admit that it made me sad that this 750 year old behemoth is now just a really impressive stump.
