As the old man drifted in and out of consciousness he could hear his sons arguing. The sound of conflict focused his attention until he realized the cause of their disagreement was how much their father's funeral would cost them.
Rallying his strength he managed to get his sons' attention and motioned for them to gather close to his bedside. When they were listening, he whispered,
"Boys. All these years you haven't known this: your mother and I never got married. "
There was a collective gasp and one son asked,"You mean we're bastards?"
"Yes," came the reply, " and cheap ones, too!"
