My Uncle on my Mothers' side did not have an indoor toilet. Us kids hated visiting them because of having to use the outhouse. He kept it clean and the stink wasn't bad...but it was still a new thing to us kids. A Sears and Roebuck catalog sat next to the holes.
Needless to say...humidity wasn't that much of a factor back then.
