So many drivers are clueless, or want an incident to be able to sue.

Most of my commute to work is Interstate, and I commute when traffic is light (4am - 515am, and then usually sometime between 10am and noon). I do not, will not abide by someone that wants to follow me or hang out in my blind spot. I do whatever I can (like you did) to get rid of them.

I think most of the time that sort is more clueless. I think a lot of drivers like to latch onto another driver to use them for pacing, even though I don't think they consciously think about it. I'll often seen 2 cars at 4am nose to tail at 80mph when they could instead be separated by ¼ mile or more. And it's frequent enough, that I'm fairly certain that they aren't friends that are traveling together. Another thing that will often brush those folks off, is weaving back and forth through your own lane. Not crazy weaving, not over the line weaving, just enough that it's obvious you aren't going straight and steady. Most of the time, other cars will either back off or pass.
