My antique house door lock is like that. Over time the keys wear and the pins wear and they don't line up one way due to beveling of the pins. A bit of it might be the old key and the grooves. The shift of torque from one way to the other applies just enough pressure because of too much clearance. That's a good theory. Repairing it is more of a certainty.
