That picture of the AirFrance 747 is taken in St. Maarten. The shack under the nose, on the beach, is a bar (The Wreck Bar), where every landing and takeoff is judged. The wingtip vortices from the heavies can, and do, uproot the umbrellas and tables on the deck. The runway ends right at the beach. When a heavy departs, people run out onto the beach, and wait for the spoolup. The jet blast usually knocks them ass over teakettle right into the surf. Is a riot watching all this. If it is a slow day, the girls at the bar will flash the incoming flights. My F/O always gets an eyeful on short final.
