In about 1969 I was already deep into photography and I bought a brand new Yashika Mat 124G.
It uses 120 or 220 film, and makes a large 2.25 x 2.25 negative. I bought in on base at the BX, and it was 19 dollars. The first wedding I shot with it, I was money ahead. I still have it tucked in the closet. I really should sell it just to be rid of it. I will never use it again. Only Elon Musk could afford me as a wedding photographer, I will never shoot another wedding for any remotely reasonable price.
I have a Canon 5DsR full frame sensor in a 35mm format. I rarely ever use it, as my iPhone is always right there, and takes amazing photos.
Another thing to ask him, what does he envision as his main subject. If it is racing photography, he will want long telephoto lenses. Photos of the kids and dog will be better with a 50 mm lens or even wider angle.
