Did you notice how the paint is damaged on that closeup shot of the nose? It has been burned off in the spiral muzzle flash from the cannon.
The General Electric CF34 engines on the A10 were heavily modded after their introduction in the A10 fleet. Became (pardon the pun) bulletproof after several years. The pressure puffs and nasty muzzle gases from the cannon that were ingested by the engines had a bad habit of ablading and eroding the fan and compressors. GE upgraded everything and made quite an engine out of the experience.
Those same engines are in use in the civilian fleet on the Challengers, 601 and 604, and the CRJ fleet.
I had a windshield peel off and go thru one exactly halfway to Hawaii. Engine burped, and then continued to run flawlessly all the rest of the way there. The borescope inspection revealed small slivers of glass in the bypass duct. No damage.
A tribute to all the guys that flew them in the Warthogs.
