When the A-10s would turn onto their firing run, shortly before they opened up, the normal scream of the engine was accentuated by a high-pitched shriek -- like engaging an additional turbine of some kind. I'm told (but I was a kid, so the story may have been dumbed down for me) that the pilots engage a the engines' "starters" before firing the gun (if they have the time) b/c if they maneuver during firing and the cannon exhaust went through an engine, it'd stall.
That symphony of warmachine sturm and drang was incredible -- and I'd swear it looked like the aircraft almost stopped in the sky when the cannon had fired a few bursts in rapid succession.
