True story: I was working for a gay couple and they had an HVAC contractor that had done work there before, so I had to figure if I could work him in for the new ducting and whatever. 3 of us in conversation, one owner, the AC guy and me. They actually negotiated a hand job right there in front of me as kind of a joke.
First I unpacked his bid and ripped his fees to shreds. Then I fired him and did the work myself while other trades were busy at their part. Gave me something to do other than superintend when a lot of rough ins were going in place.
Yeah, I kept my T&M job right up to painting and cashed out. I thought it might be close though when I dismissed the dude.
He wanted $1800 in 2010 just to disconnect an air handler in the crawl space that was in the way of a new foundation wall. I pulled the plenum off and sealed off that end of the unit in about an hour, then designed a new plenum that would fit in between the unit and the new concrete. Had that made for about $300 and tied the new branch into it.
