One-Owner, 40k-Mile 1976 Volvo 265 DL 4-Speed

From the seller:

Good afternoon, everyone!

I’m pleased to introduce another interesting automobile from the James G. Robinson Collection, this very cool 1976 Volvo 265 DL Wagon, a car that was one of Mr. Robinson’s personal favorites.

Mr. Robinson purchased this Volvo new in 1976, and it spent its early years serving as one of the family’s weekend and vacation automobiles. Unlike so many family cars that are eventually traded or sold, this one remained with him for the rest of his life. Today, with approximately 39,765 original miles showing on the odometer, it offers a wonderful connection to the Robinson family’s automotive history.

For those unfamiliar with the model, the 265 DL was a relatively uncommon six-cylinder version of Volvo’s popular 200-series wagon, powered by a 2.7-liter B27F V6 engine. Most American buyers were more familiar with the four-cylinder 245 wagon, making the 265 an interesting variation of Volvo’s famously practical family automobile. This example is also equipped with a manual transmission.

Years later, Mr. Robinson decided to give his longtime family wagon an entirely different personality. The Volvo was repainted in its original light blue finish and transformed into a surf-themed vintage beach cruiser, complete with a custom roof-mounted surfboard, factory Volvo roof rack, and whitewall tires.

The result is a wonderfully playful interpretation of what began as a practical Swedish family wagon. The light blue paint, original-style bright trim, steel wheels with Volvo hubcaps, whitewall tires, and surfboard give it the appearance of a vintage beach wagon that might have been right at home along the California coast in the 1970s.

What I particularly enjoy about this Volvo is that it wasn’t simply purchased as a collectible. It was part of Mr. Robinson’s family life, and he later chose to preserve it and give it a personality of its own.

I think this Volvo tells a particularly enjoyable story about Mr. Robinson. He appreciated important automobiles, but he also understood that cars could simply be fun. This one certainly reflects that side of his personality.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this unusual Volvo. As always, I appreciate your questions, comments, and bids, and I’ll do my best to answer any questions about the car and its history.
