Sailing off of western Manhattan Beach a few months back, I am maybe 300 yards off of the beach when there is a big splash right behind me, and I see a scuba diver surfacing behind me. He sees me, and immediately dives. No other boat as far as I can see. No other diver. No one on the beach. Hmmm.
I call (on the cell phone) the Coast Guard. While talking to them, a small 18' or so runabout comes from Del Rey direction, and swoops into the general area behind me. The diver surfaces again, and they close, and the single diver gets in the boat, and they speed off again, far enough away from me to not get a number, and head back towards Del Rey.
The coasties alert the MDR sheriffs, and somehow(imagine that), they lose them. This dive spot was close to the offshore oil loading terminal for Chevron, the main sewage treatment plant for all of LA and the Scattergood Power Plant. It is also 3 miles or so from Pelican Parts.
Never heard another thing.
Yep, just a matter of time.
