I have used a long bar-type clamp in the past, but if I have to do it again I will invest in one of the "squeeze" clamps. Those are like bar clamps, but the tightening mechanism is a ratcheting handle that you squeeze, rather than a screw you turn. It lets you control the orientation and position of the clamp so it doesn't slip off the link, which is a problem I had quite a bit of.
I put one wheel on the ground, and the other up in the air. I remove that one road wheel. I use my floor jack to move the trailing arm of the wheel that is in the air upward to where the ball more or less lines up with the socket in the drop-link.
