you were right the first time. the beach we were on is on the Pacific up by Kalaloch. you don't get surf like that on the Sound
(check upper left on the horizon) trust me when I say that the log was firmly anchored. it was one that didn't make it to the jam out of the picture on the right. (the big stuff that RoninLB is talking about) also, the water stopped just shy of actually undercutting the log. once the tide started to surround the log, we were long gone
I definitely agree with you that there are many people doing foolish things on the beach. you see it every day. I did see some people tempting fate by dancing on some seriosly loose logs that could have easily taken a leg had either of them slipped, not to mention risking riptides as the tide was returning. you can see them at the upper right where the water already reaches the logs
