A normal washer and a nut is all the factory used. I use "nylocs" - nuts with locking insert material made from nylon like you use on your valve covers. "Nyloc" was the original brand name for this style of nut. Locknuts are unnecessary in this application but the taller nut protects a bit more of the exposed threads from rusting. If you use your old valve cover nuts they are even pre-oiled.
