One of those Murphy's Law 914 electrical problems that acts up at most inconvenient time or whenever away from the garage. What's interesting is that it stopped immediately after you changed out the switch so seems to point to something in that area. Are the wires and terminals on the switch plug in good condition? Check the terminals - maybe the starter +12V and starter relay wire terminals got too hot and they are not making good contact at the switch. Check the tumbler mechanism and make sure it's rotating the switch properly. Hook a continuity light across the switch and repeatedly switch it on and off a bunch of times to ensure it always contacts. One other thing - I don't know if your '72 has the seat belt relay under the passenger seat, but if it does and someone did a poor job of jumpering the yellow starter wires together to bypass it, maybe there's an intermittent connection there.
