The oil consumption with good compression/leakdown is a good indicator that the valve guides are indeed worn. A quart in 500 miles is still not that bad, but 5-6k miles is probably a pretty good estimate. Enough time to plan for the expense (hopefully...)

Watch your oil consumption and listen for a rattling sound under hard accelleration. If you hear that, it's the valves rattling in the guides, assuming under normal conditions they are adjusted properly. Increased oil consumption is a good indicator - don't let it go too long as the longer it goes, the more likely it is that you'll end up damaging more than just the guides. If it's just the guides that need replacing it might not set you back that much.
