My 87 Carrera has 154,000 miles on it. The motor has never been apart. It had very good compression and leakdown numbers just like your car at 134,000 miles. The mechanic that did the last valve adjust and has cared for the car for many years through different owners stated that (in his vast experience) ALL Carrera 3.2 motors will show moderate valve guide wear by no later than 150-170,000 miles. He also stated that my valves are a little noisy indicating to him that the guides are in need of replacement. I have the same puff of smoke at statrtup as you do. I see no smoke on deceleration and my car does not leak a drop of oil. My oil consumption (Mobil 1) is probably between 500-700 miles per qt.

I can't say what to do, but a 5-6,000 mile window is awful tight. Either your mechanic KNOWS something is amiss or he is being way too dramatic. FWIW 88,000 miles is nothing for your Carrera 3.2.

I plan on going at least 10-20,000 more miles on my daily driven car before having a valve job and guide replacement. Unless I have money burnin a hole in my pocket or it is demonstrated to me that they are worn, I am not touching the pistons and cylinders.

Finally, my mechanic stated that he has very rarely had to replace valves at 150-170,000 miles. They are typically fine and can be ground. He stated most Carrera 3.2 motors will go 250,00-300,000 miles before needing a full rebuild.

Good luck!

Enjoy your "Sweet Spot" 911--hehe!
