The TDI jettas from 1997 - 2003 had more torque than the 2liter gas motors. Torque is what gets you going. For 2004, the new TDI has high pressure direct injection: better milage and MORE torque! The Jetta is tight in the back for legroom, the wagon fixes the headroom complaint for me (I'm 6'2") Some people complain the suspensions are a bit on the soft side. VW offers a sport package for the new TDI Jetta, which includes sport seats with deep side bolsters, 16' alloys and a firmer suspension. This would be a serious cross country car. Your bladder will give out before your butt or the fuel supply.
On another note, I drove a new TDI 2 liter 16 valve Passat this morning. Asking was $32.700 LCD (little Canadian Dollars) Again, I found the suspension quite soft compared to my '93 Passat turbo (with 330,000 Km) If I had the cash to burn, I'd add a Weltmeister bar & some decent rubber and have fun.
