Smoke after valve adjustment

My 87 (99k miles) never smoked before except for the usual cold start blue puffs. I recently had the valves adjusted and on the way home there was no smoke at all. The engine really purrs and is strong, but about two days after the valve adjust I'm noticing some gray (maybe blue/gray) intermittent puffs of smoke at stop lights and a couple times on acceleration. After it's good and hot I don't notice the smoke.

Question: Can bad valve adjustment cause a too rich condition and thus cause more smoke?

Since the engine was R&R'd for a clutch job at the same time, is it possible that a loose sensor wire connection could be messing with my mixture? I would really appreciate your advice on this before I talk to my wrench about this.

The PPI in May '04 showed 190-192 compression on all cyls and good leakdown results.

Thanks!
