Johannesburg - It doesn't happen everyday that a Porsche is blessed with holy water. But this is exactly what happened at St Boniface German Catholic Church in Sundowner, Johannesburg, on Sunday.
Members of the South African Porsche 356 Register gathered for a service at the church where they had their cars blessed in the name of St Christopher, the patron saint of all travellers.
Father Hans Schrober, who conducted the service, said: "We pray every July holiday, in the name of St Christopher, that God ensures all motorists and passengers return home safely."
He then blessed the cars belonging to the congregation and the Porsches.
"We, the owners of these old timers, get them blessed every five years," said Peter Dorfer, chairperson of the 356 Register.
"It's a big European tradition, especially in Austria, Bavaria and Switzerland, where people even have old carriages blessed."
"Ferry Porsche (designer of among others the Porsche 911 and ex-chair of the company that carries his name) also had his Porsche blessed."
The 356, the predecessor of the 911, was built in the 50s and the 60s.
"It's no wonder these old Porsches look so good," said one bystander when Schrober sprinkled holy water on the vehicles.
