I've heard that a stage II twin-turbo kit would bring the power of that car near 500hp. And it would still be covered under factory warranty.
I sat in one at the dealer we bought my wife's New Beetle Turbo (great car for her, BTW). It was comfortable inside, but I'd really like to drive it to see what it's all about. But for the cost savings, a 'regular' Golf GTI would be fine for commuting and alll....
