too little, for too much, too late, AND too heavy...
Maybe 3 years ago it would have been great (I think that's when Europe got it) but by now, 240 hp, 4wd, for over $30K?? What's the point, unless you're one of those people with a Wolfsburg tattoo or something similarly devotional to the brand. I think VWs are cool, but they lost their way with the Golf. Does that car really *need* navigation? The guy that wants that in his car is not looking for a Golf...
The car is simply not special anymore. It's rare, and handles ok... but that's what RPI (from Canada, I believe) has been building for much less than that. I've seen great A2 Golfs w/ a 4Motion "grafted" onto them w/ a built up VR6... 5 years ago. Light, fast, and reliable too.
While I'm on this rant, why couldn't US market get the 4Motion Golf, Jetta, or even the A3 earlier? So they wouldn't compete w/ each other?? How come no one in Europe sees this as a problem?
Do Saab and Subaru think they are competing and taking sales from each other? I don't get it...
