I have heard of the later cars guages not working with a low battery. If he had a direct short, and it pulled a ton of amps off of the battery, that could be the guage problem. I doubt the fans just wore out and locked up. I have parted out cars with fans that were "stiff", but I have never seen one that was locked up.
