Refrigeration unit removal

Hello and Help!
I'm renting a property that unfortunately contains an old 1930's wooden refrigeration unit. THe unit (refrigerator) is approximately 9X7 in size.
My question is this, how do I dispose of the unit, and does the wooden revfrigeration box have coolant lines running through it (the walls/floor) I've called 12 companies and all of them suggest calling the borough to make arrangements to remove it. THis could cost thousands of dollars that I don't want to spend.
Thanks,
Frank B
