Both of you are right about that. The pins are called skittles, apparently, and when we played it we just called the whole game skittles. This cabin I was staying at in Canada has it. The owner bought it and had it refurbished a little so it's functioning. Needs to be recovered, but otherwise it's perfect.

Really fun to play too. Different holes, different points. Different "skittle" placement, different difficulty level. At the end of the round (when no balls go in) you tally up your score and add it to whatever you already had. If you knock a skittle down, you lose the points you racked up during that turn.

I love playing pool so I was naturally drawn to it, even though it has a much more "russian roulette" feel to it. Even though it's just a bar game, you can definitely use some billiard skills to play it. I found that using carom shots off the object ball was really helpful for the big scores.
