I'm not sure you can say that Tolkein glorified war - or maybe say that without certainty.

Tolkein served in World War I, he wrote about things that disturbed him a great deal and many of his battle scenes and the aftermath were taken directly from what he witnessed in that war.

There was a book my wife was reading that showed his connections and history in regards to WWI and how it affected his writing. To be sure he was a fantasy writer but to be fair he did not glorify war. I think maybe Farmir's comment would be more accurately described as Tolkein's own.

There was a lot of discussion when the Lord of the Rings movies came out about how inappropriate they were in that the glorified war but I don't buy that. I agree with Tolkein, there's no glory in war there is only glory in that which we protect.

It will be a nice day when I don't have to wake up and worry about who is trying to take my freedom and liberty away. The fact remains that liberty and freedom will not defend themselves so...fight we must if it be by the pen or by the sword.
