are you speaking of 80-83 bus heads?
the main difference is the shape of the exhaust port where the exhaust manifold meets the head, it is more rectangular than the rounded exhaust ports that we are used to.
the assumption:
I don't think that VW would make an engine less efficient than the ones that came before it, so does this mean that the square ports have better flow characteristics? not sure, but the odds are in favor of it.
the problem:
If you have already invested in an exhaust setup, you will have to get yours modified, or a new one.
