It's a shame. I actually had a lot of respect for Powell at one point but he's permantantly destroyed his own credibility by associating himself with this administration and its lies and general idiocy. He really did have the potential to be the nation's first minority president, but I think the chances of that ever happening now are even less than that of BushCo getting "re"-elected.
Conspiracy theory: The Republican party, afraid of backing a minority candidate, wants to make DAMN sure that the Dick (as in Cheney, not my wang, not that there's much difference) gets the nomination in 2008. As such, they need to destroy C.P.'s credibility and effectively knock him out of the running. How better to do that than force him into a lose-lose proposition of being the guy to INSIST that Hussein has WMDs when it's known there are none? Win-win for BushCo - the "justification" for war is out there with C.P.'s credibility behind it AND the Republican party doesn't have to alienate its hardcore closet-rascist right wing base (and votes) in 2008. Horrible to think, but you know. . . it does kinda make sense. . .
