Dan, this is the part no one wants to discuss. I remember reading parts of the Koran in an undergraduate theology class and being shocked by the message. The professor reassured me that the harsh messages in the Koran were being replaced by a "kinder, gentler" Islam.
Mohammad's "convert or die" method was ultimately successful.
