in a zombie populous being mobile is the most important, a big truck would be the best......you need a safe place to sleep, plus you could have a hatch opening the roof so you use air powered weapons and flame devices from an elevated perspective, this means more kills.
for hand to hand i'd say the sawed-off-shotgun would be the most effective, plus it's easy to load shoutguns shelves yourself, this also opens up a variety of ammo loads.
a sharp machetti (sp?) would be good to have too.
