Belated new purchase pic & story
I finally put film in my ancient Pentax and took some shots on my “new” Carrera, purchased in August.
I’d always wanted a white Cabriolet – it evokes fond memories of my father’s white/black Super 90 when I was a kid. Though I’d been looking for an 83 SC, I liked the simplicity of the ad I saw for this 84 Carrera, and ventured up to Vallejo, CA for a look. I’d seen several Porsches and not one had “clicked.” But when he opened his garage door, I heard music. Car had 52,000 miles and looked immaculate – not just surface stuff but down underneath in nooks and crannies. He had every receipt and piece of and documentation on the car since its private import in 1985. I didn’t know what R.o.W. meant at first. After a little research and discovering car had been titled and smogged in California for 20 years, it didn’t bother me. I had the PPI done by Sam Sipkins of Oakland, a venerable, salty Porsche veteran who used to race 356s and works on my brother’s Carrera. He told me he’d buy the car in a heartbeat.
I enjoy this board but I’m only a vicarious DIY-er. Truth is, I have little experience and less talent. But I am motivated to learn. If any of you out there know of good courses, videos, hands-on training opportunities on Porsche basic mechanics, I’d love to know.
By the way, the G. Shep. is something of an R.o.W., too. He was imported two years ago. He’s now in protection training and has proved his mettle twice on the streets of Hollywood when I was approached by crackheads. A wonderful addition to the household!
