We just had some carpet installed in our bedroom a few months back and the installer claimed shaving cream was the best stuff but again, it truly depends upon what you are trying to remove and how long it has been there.
I personally like Castrol Super Clean. Allow it to set and follow this by working it in with a brush. Use a steam cleaner with upholstery attachment to remove the solution and hopefully, the stain. I have been able to remove 'crud' that other products could not touch with the Castrol product.
