Some years ago, when I was single and a little lacking in the housekeeping department, a tube of Fan Belt dressing fell off my dresser, onto my bedroom floor where it got stepped on. Nice glop of black goop got tracked into the carpet. It looked like black toothpaste.
A year later, when moving out of the apartment, I went to the Manager to talk about how big a bite the spot on the carpet was going to take from my security deposit. He grabbed a spray bottle and a rag and we went to take a look. He said "here, try this" and handed me the bottle/rag, and with minimal work, I removed the spot completely. You couldn't see it at all.
The bottle contained common household rubbing alcohol.
