I still use Shout or Resolve on carpets in cars for general cleaning. I also use our rug shampoo'er (home vacuum type contraption) for auto carpet cleaning with the regular home carpet soap that they sell everywhere.
I'm sure there are many other suggestions for general carpet cleaning.
