You have nothing to lose by trying, other than wasting some time by standing in line. The DMV link cited above is for the YOM rules, which are for removing a later series plate and replacing it with ones appropriate to the car's vintage, which don't have to be the exact plates that came with the car when it was new.
That doesn't apply here, as you have docs to show these plates went with this car, so I'd say your chances are good. Somewhere in the DMV code there's a section which describes what you're trying to do. You might have to try a couple different times to get the results you want, but whatever you do, do no let the DMV weenies glom onto your plates! They want nothing more than to take your old plates and give you shiney new ones, so the stoplight cameras can take your picture.
One question I forgot to ask - is the plate sequence still clear? The real reason they want to destroy the old black plates is they use those sequences for those silly "boutique" plates.
