Rick, I wouldn't exactly call Mike Bloomberg a "Republican," more like a Liberal Democrat who ran on the other party's platform. Neither would Mike, I suspect, if one were to ask him privately.

NYC is home to a lot of "limousine liberals," or people who have come into great wealth through means other than capitalist struggle. As a result, they have a great deal of personal guilt, which they attempt to assuage by advocating the worn-out agenda of the left. We are also home to a large population of folks who are incapable of visualizing themselves in the 38% federal bracket, and so think nothing of using their vote to elect those who believe will bring them economic empowerment.
