Funny story about a small country with a submarine (not Canada, sorry). They had one sub. The Big Navy Brass (BNB) was very excited about said sub. Once a year, every year, they would get the sub underway for operations, so that the BNB could brag about how modern and powerful their Navy was. The crew took the sub out past the visual horizon, past where the beach-bound Brass could see, then called in by radio that they were preparing to submerge, then a few moments later that they were submerging. Then they'd go off the radio for half an hour or so, then announce that they were back at periscope depth. After driving around in circles on the surface for a few hours, making periodic calls back to the beach announcing how wonderfully the submerged operations were proceeding, they would announce that they were surfacing and returning to port.
The Brass apparently never figured it out, though the US Navy sub operating nearby generally got a kick out of it. As I understand it, those submariners make pretty good money for driving a surface boat once a year.
