YOu will be able to compress them by hand. Just use slow even pressure. It will take about 20-30s to compress them. Don't try and push them fast, slow and steady wins the race.

when the plunger bottoms out start turning. It is likely you will find a click where it drops down about 1/8". this is when the plunger is engaged. I always turn one direction till it stops and then back out and count turns. this way both sides are the same. good luck!
