I always think of Carl Sagan's "cosmic calendar". Remember that? Humanity has occupied this planet for a mere flicker of time. Dinosaurs roamed our world for a hundred million years. "modern" man? Maybe 10 thousand years. In that time it appears we have nearly brought the planet to it's knees. Of course the planet will survive. It is self-cleaning and indestructable. Humans, on the other hand will someday vanish from this place, probably due to a combination of disease, famine and war. At that point, the big orb just keeps spinning as if we were never here.
