Unless he can go to glass, which he said he can't work with, I think his best efforts should be to make the plastic lenses as best he can and make them as inexpensive as possible. Users just have to accept the fact that the lenses are a replacement item.
Even with the protective coatings and additives plastic lenses are still going to get scratched and milked up from UV attack. And you better pay attention that the bulbs you use have a UV filter on them. Not all do and then you have the UV ray attack not only from the sun but also from inside. Even the big auto companies haven't seemed to have figured these problems out yet.
