Britt, I lived in Munich for about 4 years a decade ago. The more intersting the neighborhood, the larger the price tag. For night life, look around the Schwabing area. Upmarket: try Heidhausen.
I lived in Nymphenburg which is a good "middle ground" and not too far from everything. Really neat 18th century castle in the middle of it too. I was paying DM1000 a month rent for a 30sq m. single room apartment. So don't expect any bargains. Everyone wants to live in Munich and it can take 6 months to find an apartment. You should ask your employer if they have any ideas given the shortness of your stay.
There are lots of good websites on Munich. It is a magnificent city - feels more like a giant village. (No building is higher than 5 floors apart from the olympia turm and the BMW building).
